7 Tips For Pitching to Investors
1) Get to the point
When presenting to a group of investors they are there for one reason. Make their time worthwhile and get to the point. This doesn’t mean do ‘the ask’ in slide one, it means catch their attention early with the benefits of working with you.
2) Establish The Need/ Do your Research
Impress the investors with your research. Your goal should be to limit the amount of questions they will want to ask you later while still getting to the point. Cover topics such as market research, business plan and a forecast.
3) Be Confident
This should be self explanatory but if you do not have faith in yourself how can you expect anyone else. Yes, public speaking can be very daunting but practice, practice, practice until you know your pitch like the back of your hand. Build your confidence in steps, pitch your pets, pitch to your family, pitch to your friends and pitch to your team.
4) Show Your Competition
It can come across as a weakness if you don’t acknowledge that there are similar businesses to yours. Understanding and acknowledging what sets you apart is a crucial part to your business plan and pitch. Do not forget it.
5) Introduce your Team
An investor is going to be someone that is going to work with you whether directly or indirectly. Therefore, it is important to introduce your team just as though you would introduce yourself. They want to know who they are working with and it can gain you reputation if you already have a recognizable marketing team, developer or CFO.
6) Don’t Forget a Q&A Segment
No matter how well you cover your bases, investors will always have questions for you. Making sure you have a slotted time for this shows you are ready and prepared to take on anything.
7) Accept Accomplishment
When you get into the pitching groove it can be easy to just keep selling. You need to recognize the signs of an interested investor and give them the opportunity to say yes. Ignoring these signs can be largely detrimental to them changing their mind. You want to show and prove to them that you are perceptive and willing to make a deal.
